Infertility Glossary

The jargon

There are quite a few abbreviations in the infertility world that make it quite difficult to understand what’s going on sometimes. I am going to list only a few abbreviations I am actively using.

TTC – Trying To Conceive

MFI – Male Factor Infertility

IUI – Intra-Uterine Insemination

IVF – In Vitro Fertilisation = One or more eggs are fertilised in the lab and then implanted into the uterus after a number of days (usually between 3 and 5 days).

ICSI – Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection = A single sperm is injected into an egg. This is done when the sperm count is low or sperm is failing to fertilise the egg without assistance.

2WW – 2 Week Wait – This is the time between ovulation or embryo transfer until the pregnancy test.

OHSS – Ovarian HyperStimulation Syndrome

An extensive list can be found on various Blogs, my favourite being Our Misconception’s babelfish for infertility.

Infertility – what is it?

I am fairly lazy and don’t want to reinvent the wheel, thus just a few links to blogs with excellent content.

Infertilit He – a rare male perspective
